A late evening shot of this “Not Your Mom, Not Your Milk” chalk drawing captures the goal of the Animal Justice Advocates: a humane animal ethic integrated into the University of Virginia (UVA) community and landscape. The first in Animal Justice Advocates’ (AJA) “Education Without Violence” campaign, this chalk drawing illuminates just a few particular breaches of consent involved in dairy milk production: the forced separation of mother and baby cow just days after birth, whereafter female cows become cows raised for milk and male calves are either killed immediately or raised to be killed for veal or beef. Moreover, this drawing captured  the substitution of milk replacers for the calves’ meals, as the mothers’ milk is taken for human consumption. AJA hopes that their campaign “Education Without Violence” will enable the UVA community to recognize and move beyond the outdated, unethical, and inhumane treatment of animals still in practice at our University and beyond.
